Iago's second song of Shakespeare's
Othello, Act II, Scene 3. Part of
an old ballad relating to the stinginess of the 12th century.
1. King Stephen was a worthy peer,
His breeches cost him half a crown.
He held that six-pence all too dear,
With that he call'd the tailor loun!
2. He was a wight of high renown,
And thou art but of low degree:
'Tis pride that pulls the country down.
Then tk' thine auld clock about thee.
