Paroles

Autolycus makes his exit in Act IV, Scene 3 of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale with one stanza of this song which appeare in The Antidote against Melancholy, 1661 to the tune of 'Hanskin'. It has also appeared in many other 17th century song books, attesting to its popularity at the time.

1. Jog on, job on the footpath way
And merrily hent the stile a :
Your merry heart goes all the day,
Your sad tires in a mile a.

2. Cast care away, let sorrow cease,
A fig for melancholy.
Let's laugh and sing, or, if you please,
We'll frolic with sweet Dolly.

3. Your paltry money-bags of gold,
What need have we to stare for ?
When little or nothing soon is told,
And we have the less to care for.
